Score 170 on GRE Quant — every question right, the very top of the scale — and you land in the 89th percentile. Score 170 on Verbal and you are in the 99th.

Same exam. Same 130–170 scale. Same afternoon. One of those perfect scores puts roughly 87,000 people shoulder to shoulder with you. The other, about 8,000.

That single asymmetry explains almost everything about how to prepare for this test.

The scale is lying to you

Because both measures use identical numbers, applicants add them up and quote a total. Committees never do. The average Quant score is 157.6 against 151.4 for Verbal, and the Quant pool is jammed at the top — thick with engineers and economists. Near-perfect is ordinary there; anything less is loud.

What you are actually sitting

Since September 2023 the whole thing runs 1 hour 58 minutes: one 30-minute essay, then two Verbal and two Quant sections in either order. Quant gives you 12 questions in 21 minutes, then 15 in 26. That is 47 minutes for 27 questions — under 1 minute 45 seconds each.

Scores last five years. Testing from home now needs a second camera — since 5 January 2026 you scan a QR code with your phone so the proctor can watch your desk.

The first twelve questions set your ceiling

Here is what most candidates do not discover until it is too late. The GRE is section-adaptive. Your first Quant section is of average difficulty, and how you handle it decides how hard the second one will be.

Do well and section two arrives harder — which is what you want, because your score depends on the difficulty you were working at, not just how many you got right. Stumble and you are routed to an easier section, where even a flawless run cannot reach the top of the scale.

Twelve questions. Twenty-one minutes. Everything after that is capped.

There is no calculus on it

The mathematics stops at roughly the level of a strong sixteen-year-old: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis. No calculus. No trigonometry. No matrices, no proof.

You are given a calculator, but it is deliberately useless — four functions, a square root, a memory key. It exists to stop you fumbling arithmetic, not to solve anything for you.

So why do good mathematicians score 158?

Try this one.

Most people pick A. Squaring makes things bigger.

But x = 2 makes A greater. x = 1 makes them equal. And x = ½ makes x² = ¼, so now B is greater. The answer is D.

Nothing there is difficult. What is difficult is remembering, with a clock running, that "x" quietly includes fractions, zero and negative numbers.

The whole exam is built from traps of that shape — questions that look like they need solving when they need a thirty-second check of three cases. Which is why someone fresh from a rigorous degree can lose to a well-drilled undergraduate. They solve correctly, just slowly. The GRE gives no marks for elegance.

You are not competing against everyone

The overall percentile table is not your benchmark. Your own field is.

Look at the top row. The average applicant to a mathematics or statistics programme scores 165 — only the 67th percentile overall, but it means half your real competitors are above you. A 162 is excellent for biology and mediocre for statistics. The number means nothing until you set it beside the right group.

Who still wants it

It depends on the department, not the university. MIT's EECS department ignores GRE scores entirely — while MIT's Leaders for Global Operations programme demands them. One institution, both answers.

Stanford, Harvard and Berkeley have waived it in some departments and kept it in others. Economics, finance and several PhD tracks are the likeliest to still ask. In Europe it is rarely required outright; at business schools it usually just substitutes for the GMAT.

So check the individual programme page, not the university's. And "optional" is not neutral: a high Quant score is free evidence, especially if your degree is from somewhere the committee does not know. A mediocre one is better left out.

How to prepare

Sit one full timed test before you study anything — not for the score, but to find where your minutes go. Practise by question type rather than topic, and log a reason for every mistake: concept gap, misread, slip, or ran out of clock. The pattern surfaces within two weeks, and it is rarely the one you expected. Most candidates need eight to twelve weeks; if your school foundations are shaky, start there instead.
